Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and Cooperative Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) have urged Nasarawa state government to invest and prioritise women’s nutrition for economic and healthy living to fulfill their potentials.
Sandra Osammor, Senior Project Manager, GAIN, made the call at the International Women’s Day celebration in Lafia.
Osammor said the day provided opportunities to recognise the importance of nutrition for women’s health and well-being in ensuring access to nutritious foods and proper health care.
This, she said was essential for women to thrive and fulfil their potentials.
Osammor explained that GAIN in collaboration with Cooperative Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE), with funding from the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign affairs had launched CAtalyzing Strengthened policy aCtion for heAlthy Diets and resiliencE(CASCADE) project to improve nutrition.
According to her, the CASCADE project aimed to strengthen nutrition systems for 1.1 million women of reproductive age and children under age of 5 in four states including Nasarawa, Bauchi, Jigawa and Kebbi respectively.
“Today, GAIN is marking IWD with the theme “Inspire Inclusion’ it offers us opportunity to recognise the strength, resilience and wisdom that women bring to every aspect of life.
“GAIN is not just calling to break down barriers but to create opportunities for women to thrive in food production, consumption of healthy diet and to be economically empowered,” she said.
Also speaking, the wife of the Nasarawa state Governor, Hajiya Silifat Sule said she would use her office to lobby for more empowerments for women to enhance their socio economic well being.
She tasked parents to take care of their children especially the female children to prevent them from becoming drug addicts.
According to her, the rate of drug abuse among young girls is on the increase hence the need for women to caution their wards against drug abuse.
“Women should know the peers of their children to enable them know their movement and correct them accordingly,” she said.
Speaking earlier, Hajiya Aisha Rufa’i, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development said the theme ” Accelerating Gender Equality through Economic Empowerment” was informed by the imperative to invest more on women to enhance greater inclusion.
She said that her ministry with the support of the state government has trained and empowered women through skills acquisition in the areas of fishery, animal husbandry, detergent making, bakery and use of alternative clean energy.(NAN).
